About the Project

The Setúbal Encyclopedia is an open, bilingual knowledge base about Setúbal, a cosy city in sunny Portugal — its history, culture, nature, gastronomy, and daily life. The project is developed by FolkUp and is freely available to everyone.

Our mission is to collect, structure, and share reliable information about Setúbal for residents, expats, tourists, and researchers. We believe that local knowledge should be accessible, well-sourced, and presented in multiple languages.

Authors

The encyclopedia is created and maintained by a small team of enthusiasts who live in or have a deep connection to Setúbal.

Andrey — Founder & Project Coordinator

I’ve been living in Setúbal for four years now, and the city has become my second home — right after my beloved Saint Petersburg, which I miss dearly and towards which I feel that very saudade so deeply rooted in Portuguese culture.

Out of genuine respect and love for this city, I gathered a team of enthusiasts and volunteers who came together as a non-profit group with a simple goal: to digitise the stories, knowledge, and spirit of Setúbal — the city that has become home to all of us.

The most reliable way to reach me is by email at anklemPT@gmail.com, or through the contact page. But the surest way is to spot me on one of Setúbal’s narrow streets with a camera around my neck. I’m always happy to chat with neighbours.

Other team members will introduce themselves here in due time.

Partners

We are actively looking for local organisations and cultural institutions to collaborate with — museums, libraries, historical societies, and anyone passionate about preserving and sharing Setúbal’s heritage.

If your organisation would like to partner with us, please get in touch — we’d love to hear from you.

Volunteers

The encyclopedia is a community effort. We welcome volunteers who want to contribute — whether it’s writing, translating, fact-checking, photography, or simply sharing local knowledge that deserves to be preserved.

No special skills required — just curiosity and a connection to Setúbal. If that sounds like you, reach out via our contact page or email hello@folkup.city.

Sponsors

This project runs on enthusiasm, not a budget. Servers, domains, and coffee for the team don’t pay for themselves — so over time, ads may appear on the site. We’re regular people just like you, and we’re not fans of advertising either — but we recognise its necessity. We promise: it will be unobtrusive, and the moment we can do without it, we’ll drop ad funding entirely.

What we guarantee: no advertiser or sponsor will ever influence the content of our articles. Editorial independence is not up for negotiation.

If you’d like to help us get closer to the day when ads are no longer needed — buy us a coffee. It really helps.
