Setúbal Festival Calendar

Setúbal lives festivals year-round: from winter jazz evenings and carnival processions to hot June nights with sardines on coals, August processions across the Sado River, autumn medieval splendor of Palmela, and November Moscatel tastings—the city and peninsula always have something to celebrate.
Overview
The municipality of Setúbal and adjacent areas of the peninsula (Palmela, Sesimbra) have one of the busiest festival calendars in Portugal. Events cover all spheres—from religious pilgrimages and gastronomic weeks to music festivals and medieval reenactments. Below is the annual cycle of main holidays and festivals.
January
São Sebastião Festival (Festas de São Sebastião)
Dates: January 17-22
Celebration of Saint Sebastian, patron saint of one of Setúbal’s oldest parishes. The program includes a three-day triduum (preparatory services January 17-19), solemn mass on January 20 at São Sebastião Church, and a procession on January 22 from the Santos Nicolau quarter. The festival concludes with a communal meal and musical performances.
February
Carnival (Carnaval)
Dates: Variable (February-March), 47 days before Easter
Carnival processions in Setúbal are not as large-scale as in Loures or Torres Vedras, but include parades, costumed groups, and children’s events. In some years, a parade is held in the historic center, but regularity and scale of the event vary.
Circle of Jazz (Círculo de Jazz Fest)
Dates: First-second week of February (2026: February 5-14)
Jazz festival with 10+ concerts at five city venues. 15th anniversary edition in 2026. More details: Círculo de Jazz Festival.
March—April
Cheese, Bread and Wine Festival (Festival Queijo, Pão e Vinho)
Dates: Late March—early April (2025: March 31—April 2)
Gastronomic festival in Quinta do Anjo, municipality of Palmela. Dedicated to three pillars of Arrábida gastronomy: Azeitão DOP cheese, traditional bread, and regional wines. Program: tastings, cooking shows, sheep races, regional products fair, musical performances. Free shuttle from Palmela.
Setúbal Half Marathon (Meia-Maratona de Setúbal)
Dates: March-April (dates vary)
Sports event with route through historic center and city waterfronts. Exact dates and regularity require clarification.
May
International Music Festival (Festival Internacional de Música de Setúbal)
Dates: May
Classical and chamber music festival attracting performers from Portugal and abroad. Concerts take place in historic spaces—churches, monasteries, municipal halls.
Nautical Fair (Feira Náutica)
Dates: May
Event dedicated to maritime heritage and water sports. Exact format and regularity require clarification.
June
Popular Saints (Santos Populares)
Dates: Throughout June; key dates—June 13, 24, 29; march parade around June 14
Main popular festival: marches on Avenida Luísa Todi, arraiais, sardines, popular festivities. Special significance—São Pedro (June 29), patron saint of fishermen. More details: Popular Saints in Setúbal.
Sardine Gastronomic Week (Semana da Sardinha)
Dates: Late June—early July (June 27—July 6)

July
Santiago Fair (Feira de Sant’Iago)
Dates: Late July—early August (2025: July 24—August 3)
Setúbal’s oldest fair (since 1582), about 400,000 visitors. Concerts, craft stalls, gastronomy, attractions. Held in Parque Santiago (Manteigas district). Free admission. More details: Santiago Fair.
Festanima
Dates: July
Animation and cartoon film festival in Setúbal area. Exact dates, venue and format require clarification.
Summer Jazz (Jazz de Verão)
Dates: Late July (2025: July 25-27)
Summer jazz festival organized by Setúbal Jazz School. 2-3 concerts per weekend, relaxed summer atmosphere. More details: see section in Círculo de Jazz Festival article.
August
River Procession of Our Lady of the Rosary of Tróia
Dates: August 10-15 (approximately)
Círio Fluvial—statue of Our Lady crosses the Sado River accompanied by 200+ decorated boats. Nighttime candlelight procession on Tróia beach. One of Setúbal’s oldest traditions. More details: River Procession of Our Lady of the Rosary of Tróia.
September
Grape Harvest Festival (Festa das Vindimas)
Dates: Early September (2025: September 4-9)
62nd edition. Grape pressing by foot (Pisa da Uva), blessing of first must, election of Harvest Queen, parade, concerts. In Palmela. More details: Grape Harvest Festival in Palmela.
Bocage Day (Dia de Bocage)
Dates: September 15 (poet’s death anniversary)
Annual commemoration of Manuel Maria Barbosa du Bocage—great 18th-century poet, native of Setúbal. Laying of flowers at monument on Praça do Bocage, poetry readings, cultural events. Medieval Fair of Palmela (Feira Medieval de Palmela)
Dates: Last weekend of September (2025: September 26-28)
15th-century reenactment at Palmela Castle. Knight tournaments, falconry, medieval market, workshops. About 20,000 visitors. More details: Medieval Fair of Palmela.
Festival of Our Lady of Cabo Espichel (Festa de Nossa Senhora do Cabo Espichel)
Dates: September 23-26
One of the oldest traditions of Sesimbra municipality. Pilgrimage to Cabo Espichel sanctuary—majestic cape at edge of peninsula. First pilgrimages documented from 1366. Religious ceremonies in Nossa Senhora do Cabo chapel, processions, prayers. The place attracts both believers and lovers of harsh Atlantic landscapes.
Avante Festival (Festa do Avante!)
Dates: First weekend of September
Annual festival of “Avante!” newspaper of Portuguese Communist Party, held at Quinta da Atalaia, Seixal municipality (on border with Palmela). One of Europe’s largest political-cultural festivals: music, theater, film screenings, debates, gastronomy. Attracts tens of thousands of participants.
November
Moscatel Festival (Festival do Moscatel)
Dates: Third week of November (2025: November 21-23)
Tastings, cooking shows, wine market, commented trials. Largo de São João Baptista, Palmela. Free admission; 5 euros for 3 tastings with glass. More details: Moscatel Festival.
December
Setúbal Natal
Dates: December
Municipal Christmas program: Christmas market, ice skating, Christmas tree on Praça do Bocage, children’s events, concerts, light installations. Exact format and scale vary from year to year.
