Gastronomy

Gastronomic symbols of the Setúbal region.

Setúbal’s cuisine is a cuisine of the sea and the sun. Fresh sardines grilled over charcoal are not merely a dish but a cultural symbol, recognised as one of the “7 Wonders of Portuguese Gastronomy.” Chefs from across the country travel to the Livramento Market for seafood that was still in the waters of the Sado and the Atlantic that very morning.

But Setúbal is not only about fish. The Palmela and Azeitão region gave Portugal the legendary Moscatel — a fortified wine with a honeyed aroma that has been produced here since the 15th century. The soft sheep’s cheese Queijo de Azeitão, with its creamy texture, is one of Portugal’s most prized cheeses with Protected Designation of Origin (DOP). And Tortas de Azeitão — crispy rolled pastries — have become a symbol of the local confectionery tradition.

In this section — a guide to the flavours of Setúbal and the peninsula.
