Safety

Beach Flags

Flag Meaning
🟢 Green Swimming is safe
🟡 Yellow Swim with caution
🔴 Red Swimming prohibited
🏁 Checkered No lifeguard on duty

Recommendations

  • Lifeguards are on duty at equipped beaches (Figueirinha, Albarquel, Tróia, Comporta) during bathing season (June–September)
  • Arrábida beaches (Galapinhos, Coelhos) have no lifeguards. Swim at your own risk
  • Currents on Atlantic beaches (Tróia, Comporta) can be stronger than in sheltered Arrábida coves
  • Water temperature: peaks at ~19°C in September (Arrábida slightly warmer)
  • Sun in Setúbal is intense — SPF 30+ essential even on cloudy days

What to Bring

  • Sunscreen (SPF 30+), hat, sunglasses
  • Water and snacks (especially for wild beaches)
  • Trail shoes (Galapinhos, Coelhos)
  • Snorkeling mask (Arrábida has exceptionally clear water)
  • Rubbish bag — wild beaches have no bins
