Galapinhos Beach -- Europe's Best Beach
Praia dos Galapinhos is a small sandy beach on the southern coast of the Serra da Arrabida massif, situated within the Arrabida Natural Park. In 2017 it was voted the best beach in Europe by the European Best Destinations portal, receiving votes from participants in more than 130 countries. This secluded beach, with its crystal-clear waters and golden sand, framed by limestone cliffs and Mediterranean vegetation, is considered one of the natural treasures of the Setubal region.

Location and geography
Where it is
Galapinhos Beach lies on the Arrabida coast, between the towns of Setubal and Sesimbra, approximately 10 km west of the centre of Setubal. It sits at the foot of the southern slope of the Serra da Arrabida – a mountain range whose limestone cliffs plunge directly into the Atlantic Ocean.
Neighbouring beaches:
- Praia dos Galapos – immediately to the east
- Praia do Creiro – the nearest beach accessible by road
- Portinho da Arrabida – a picturesque cove and historic fishing village further east
Physical characteristics
Galapinhos is a small beach roughly 200 metres in length, hemmed in between rocky outcrops. The sand is fine and golden in hue. The water is exceptionally clear, owing to the sheltered nature of the cove and the limestone seabed. The depth increases gradually, making the beach relatively safe for swimming.
Thanks to its position in a south-facing sheltered bay, the sea here is generally calmer than on the exposed Atlantic beaches of Portugal’s western coast.
Recognition as Europe’s best beach
The 2017 vote
In 2017, the European Best Destinations portal held a worldwide vote in which participants from more than 130 countries selected the finest beach from among 280 nominees across the European continent. Praia dos Galapinhos won, earning the title of Europe’s best beach for 2017.
The jury and voters particularly noted:
- The “untouched nature” of the Arrabida Natural Park
- Crystal-clear waters of a turquoise hue
- The dramatic landscape – a convergence of mountains, cliffs and sea
- A sense of seclusion and wildness
Consequences of the recognition
The title of Europe’s best beach drew the attention of international tourists and at the same time intensified the problem of anthropogenic pressure on the fragile Arrabida ecosystem. A sharp rise in visitor numbers in subsequent years became one of the reasons for tightening access to the beaches along the coast.
Ecology
Mediterranean vegetation
The slopes surrounding the beach are covered in dense Mediterranean vegetation – maquis and garrigue. Species found here include:
- Maritime pine (Pinus pinaster)
- Aleppo pine (Pinus halepensis)
- Holm oak (Quercus ilex)
- Rosemary, juniper, rockrose and other species typical of Mediterranean maquis
This vegetation is of particular scientific value, since the Arrabida coast is one of the few stretches of the European Atlantic seaboard where such a pronounced Mediterranean flora has been preserved.
Marine ecosystem
The coastal waters of Arrabida form part of the Professor Luiz Saldanha Marine Park (Parque Marinho Professor Luiz Saldanha), established in 1998. The marine reserve supports more than 1,400 species of marine organisms, including fish, molluscs, crustaceans and algae.
The transparent waters off Galapinhos are a popular snorkelling spot, offering the chance to observe marine life in its natural habitat.
Protection status
The beach lies within the natural park, where strict restrictions on economic activity are in force. Regulatory Decree 23/98 of 14 October 1998 expanded the park’s coastal zone and established the Arrabida-Espichel Marine Zone, aimed at protecting marine flora and fauna, coastal cliffs, endemic plant species and seabird nesting sites.
Access and restrictions
Summer restrictions
The natural and morphological characteristics of the Arrabida coast are incompatible with intensive motor traffic. Accordingly, during the summer period (typically from early June to mid-September), significant restrictions on vehicular access are imposed:
- The road along the coast between Setubal and the Arrabida beaches is closed to private vehicles
- Parking spaces are extremely limited and fill up early in the morning (often by 9:00)
- A free shuttle service is operated by the Municipality of Setubal in partnership with TML (Transportes Metropolitanos de Lisboa)
How to get there
By shuttle (summer period): A free bus departs from the Alegro Setubal shopping centre, where free parking is available. The route passes through Praia da Figueirinha to Creiro, from where it is possible to continue on foot.
On foot: From the bus stop or the car park at Creiro, visitors follow a marked trail down the hillside. The descent takes approximately 15–20 minutes. The path is fairly steep but is equipped with steps at the most difficult sections (closer to the neighbouring beach of Galapos).
By bicycle or scooter: Bicycles and scooters are permitted on the coastal road even during the restriction period.
Facilities
Galapinhos is a wild beach with no facilities whatsoever:
- No bars, restaurants or cafes
- No showers or toilets
- No lifeguard service
- No equipment hire
The nearest facilities are at Praia dos Galapos and in Portinho da Arrabida. Visitors should bring their own water, food and everything they need – and, of course, carry their rubbish out with them.
Visitor recommendations
Best time

- Season: June–September (swimming season). The beach is accessible year-round, but the water is cold outside season.
- Time of day: It is advisable to arrive as early as possible – by midday the car parks are full and the beach itself may be crowded.
- Weather: The beach is sheltered from northerly winds by the mountain range, but on days with a southerly wind the swell can pick up.
Important rules
- Open fires and camping are prohibited within the park
- Collecting plants and minerals is forbidden
- Loud music is not permitted
- Fishing and spearfishing restrictions apply within the marine reserve
- Parking outside designated areas is prohibited and subject to fines
Other beaches of Arrabida
Galapinhos is not the only noteworthy beach along this stretch of coast. Neighbouring beaches include:
| Beach | Features | Facilities |
|---|---|---|
| Praia da Figueirinha | Most accessible, with parking | Bar, showers, lifeguards |
| Praia do Creiro | Calm bay near Portinho | Minimal |
| Praia dos Galapos | Adjacent to Galapinhos, slightly larger | Minimal |
| Praia dos Coelhos | Secluded, difficult to reach | None |
Cultural significance
Galapinhos Beach is more than a place to swim: it is a symbol of what the Arrabida coast represents – a territory where the wild nature of the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic Ocean just a few dozen kilometres from Lisbon. Its recognition as Europe’s best beach in 2017 put Galapinhos – and the entire Setubal region – on the map of European beach tourism, while simultaneously underscoring the need for a balance between accessibility and the conservation of this unique ecosystem.
