Neighborhoods

Historic quarters and surroundings of Setúbal — from the fishing quarter of Troino to the vineyards of Azeitão.

Setúbal is a city of quarters, each with its own history and character. Troino is the oldest fishing quarter, birthplace of the Charroco dialect and the opera singer Luísa Todi. Fontainhas is a neighbourhood that grew around freshwater springs. The SAAL social housing, built after the Carnation Revolution of 1974, is an example of how architecture can serve as an instrument of social justice.

Beyond the city limits lie the vineyards of Azeitão with their famous cheeses and wine, medieval Palmela with its Castle of the Order of Santiago, and dozens of other settlements that make up the municipality of Setúbal.

In this section — the history of how the neighbourhoods were formed, their architecture, and the people who live in them.
