Notable natives and residents of Setúbal.

Setúbal has given the world a remarkable constellation of talent. Luísa Todi (1753–1821) — an opera prima donna who conquered the stages of Berlin, St Petersburg, and Paris. Manuel Maria Barbosa du Bocage (1765–1805) — a rebel poet whose sonnets became classics of Portuguese literature. José Afonso (1929–1987) — the author of “Grândola, Vila Morena,” the song that served as the signal for the Carnation Revolution of 1974.

But Setúbal’s story is not only about celebrities. Ana de Castro Osório was a pioneer of Portuguese feminism who grew up among the canning factory workers of Troino. Michel Giacometti was a Corsican who devoted his life to preserving Portugal’s musical folklore. Sebastião da Gama was the poet of Arrábida who celebrated the beauty of the mountain range.

In this section — portraits of people whose lives are inseparably linked with Setúbal.
