Mercado do Livramento
Mercado do Livramento is an indoor food market in Setubal, acclaimed as one of the finest fish markets in the world. It combines the function of a working food market with significant architectural and artistic merit, thanks to its outstanding azulejo tile panels.

History
The first market on this site was inaugurated on 31 July 1876 at the initiative of Antonio Rodrigues Manito, then president of the Setubal municipal council.
The original building was demolished and replaced by the present structure, which opened in 1930. The market has operated continuously ever since, undergoing several rounds of modernisation. The most extensive renovation took place in 2010–2011: it preserved the building’s historic character while substantially improving its functionality.
Architecture
Exterior
The building is designed in the Art Deco style, with a distinctive facade painted in a striking pink hue. The facade blends Art Deco elements with the traditional Portuguese architectural aesthetic.
Interior
The interior is distinguished by:
- High ceilings that create a sense of spaciousness
- Cast-iron columns supporting the structure
- Abundant natural light
Azulejos
The market’s chief artistic treasure is its 5,700 azulejos (traditional Portuguese glazed tiles) adorning the walls. The tile panels were executed by the Portuguese artists Jose Antonio Jorge Pinto and Pedro Pinto.
The panels depict:
- Fishing scenes and the maritime traditions of Setubal
- Agricultural labour and views of the surrounding countryside
- The economic life of the city and its bond with the sea
Additional panels created by Rosa Rodrigues in 1944 decorate the market’s northern entrance and portray urban scenes.
Commerce
The market is celebrated above all for its fish section. The stalls display fresh catches from the Sado Estuary and the Atlantic Ocean daily:

- Fresh fish: sardines (Setubal’s signature product), gilt-head bream, sea bass, tuna, swordfish, and other species
- Shellfish and cephalopods: cuttlefish, octopus, prawns, mussels, razor clams
- Meat counters: pork, beef, poultry, cured sausages
- Fruit and vegetables: seasonal produce from nearby farms
- Cheeses, olives, bread, and other locally produced goods
International Recognition
In June 2014, the American publication USA Today named Mercado do Livramento among the world’s best fish markets. The market is regularly featured in international travel guides and gastronomic publications as one of the finest food markets in Portugal and Europe.
