Running and Cycling: Arrábida Trails

Verified

Between the Arrábida mountains and the Sado estuary lies one of the best natural “playgrounds” for running and cycling in Portugal. The Setúbal Half Marathon draws ~2,000 participants each year, the triathlon starts from the Sado River, and EuroVelo Route 1 passes through the city on its way from the Atlantic to the Algarve.

Setúbal Half Marathon

Alegro Meia Maratona de Setúbal is the city’s premier running event, held since 1990 (official course certification from 1995). In 2025, the 35th anniversary edition took place.

Distances 21.1 km (half marathon), 10 km, 5 km (family run)
Date Last weekend of April (2026 — to be confirmed)

Finish Largo José Afonso
Participants ~2,000 runners

The course winds between the city and the mountains, with the finish line offering views of Setúbal and a sea breeze.

Triathlon

Lidl Setúbal Triathlon is one of the largest triathlons in southern Portugal, organised by HMS Sports in partnership with the municipality.

Segment Distance
Swim 1.9 km (Sado River)
Bike 90 km (through Serra da Arrábida)
Run 21.1 km

Dates: 6 April 2025, 12 April 2026. The swim leg takes place in the Sado estuary, the bike leg crosses the Arrábida mountains, and the run follows a city course.

Trail Running in Arrábida

Arrábida Natural Park is ideal terrain for trail running: elevation changes of up to 500 m, Mediterranean forest, and ocean views.

The Arrábida Ultra Trail was scheduled for 23 April 2016 with distances of 14.5 km (700 m elevation gain), 23 km (1,025 m elevation gain), and 80 km (2,710 m elevation gain), but the event was cancelled. As of 2026, there is no information about the event being relaunched.

Self-guided trail running routes are described in the article Arrábida Trails.

Cycling Routes

EuroVelo 1 — Atlantic Coast

The European cycling route EuroVelo 1 passes through Setúbal on its way from northern Portugal to the Algarve. The route crosses the Sado estuary by ferry, offering the chance to spot dolphins. From there, it continues to the Tróia Peninsula and the Alentejo coast.

Characteristics: mixed surfaces — cycle paths, coastal roads, gravel tracks. Moderate difficulty with climbs near river valleys.

Mountain Biking (MTB)

The Setúbal area has 72 registered mountain bike trails (according to Trailforks). Popular trails include:

  • Trilho do Fóssil — intermediate level, a route past ancient fossils with coastal views
  • Serra do Louro — a mountain trail east of the city
  • Routes in Arrábida Natural Park — forest paths, rocky descents

Best season: spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November). In summer, only early morning rides due to the heat.

Road Cycling

A popular route: ferry from Setúbal to Tróia, then along the coast through Comporta to Santiago do Cacém. Quiet on weekdays, busy at weekends.

Cycling Infrastructure

Ciclop7

Ciclop7 — Cycling and Pedestrian Network of the Setúbal Peninsula is an inter-municipal project (Setúbal, Sesimbra, Palmela), co-funded at 50% by the European Regional Development Fund under the “Lisbon 2020” programme.

The project is creating new cycling infrastructure integrated into the urban network, with a priority on soft mobility and intermodal connections between bus, rail and ferry stations.

Cycle Lanes

The municipality has completed a Sustainable Mobility Plan providing for dedicated cycle lanes on key streets. Existing lanes run along Avenida European and Avenida Antero de Quental.

A bike-sharing programme in Setúbal has not yet launched. The nearest system is GIRA in Lisbon.
