Maritime Festivals and Traditions

Verified

Setúbal’s maritime festivals are where the sacred and the secular, fishermen’s superstitions and municipal programmes, ancient processions and humorous bathtub regattas weave together into a single fabric. The Sado estuary is not merely a body of water: it is a stage on which the city performs its identity.

Setúbal fishing port — heart of maritime traditions

The River Procession to Tróia (Círio Fluvial)

The climax of the Festas de Nossa Senhora do Rosário de Tróia and arguably the most spectacular maritime event in the Setúbal district.

History

[FOLKLORE] According to tradition, in the 16th century the ship “Rosário”, laden with stone ballast, was wrecked off the coast of the Tróia Peninsula. All cargo sank, but a wooden image of the Virgin remained afloat. Since then, the image has been kept in Setúbal and venerated as the patroness of sailors and fishermen.

How it unfolds

The festival is held in August, with exact dates depending on the tides – the Caldeira de Tróia is accessible to boats only at high water.

Programme:

  1. Triduum (three-day devotion) at the Church of São Sebastião in memory of the patroness and deceased mariners
  2. City procession with decorated altars, ending at the Cais das Fontainhas
  3. Círio Fluvial – the image of the Virgin is ferried on a decorated boat across the Sado estuary to Tróia, escorted by hundreds of boats
  4. Decorated boat competition – vessels are adorned with flowers, ribbons and lanterns
  5. Candlelit night procession on Tróia beach
  6. Folk festivities, dancing, fairs

This is one of the rare examples of a maritime procession in Portugal, linking the sacred and the nautical. More in the article on Religious Festivals of Setúbal.

Blessing of the fleet

The tradition of blessing fishing boats before the start of the season is an ancient rite practised along the entire Portuguese coast. In the Setúbal district it is particularly significant:

  • Sesimbra: as part of the festival of Senhor Jesus das Chagas (4 May, municipal holiday), a priest blesses the boats in the bay. In 2024, the procession marked its 490th anniversary
  • Setúbal: the blessing of boats takes place at the fishing port, usually as part of the Festas de Nossa Senhora do Rosário

The blessing had practical significance for fishing communities: it marked the start of the season and served as a collective ritual in the face of the dangers of the sea.

The Nautical Fair is a modern festival dedicated to maritime culture and water sports.

Maritime motifs in other festivals

The sea is present in most of Setúbal’s festivals, even those not formally “maritime”:

  • Santiago Fair (July–August): the gastronomy programme centres on fish and seafood; grilled sardines are essential
  • Bocage Festival (15 September, City Day): the waterfront becomes the main festivity venue
  • Semana do Choco (Cuttlefish Week, March): a gastronomic festival dedicated to choco frito – the dish that has become the city’s symbol
  • Fado em Setúbal (July–August): open-air fado concerts in the quarters, with themes of the sea, fishermen, longing for the departed
