Sailing and Yachting in Setúbal

Verified

The sheltered Sado estuary, the open waters of the Atlantic and the steady winds of the Costa Azul create ideal conditions for sailing. The Clube Naval Setubalense – one of the oldest yacht clubs in the region – brings together athletes, enthusiasts and keepers of a maritime tradition that in Setúbal stretches back centuries.

Conditions for sailing

Waters

Setúbal offers diverse conditions for sailing:

  • Sado estuary – sheltered waters for training and practice; average depth allows safe sailing even for beginners
  • Bay of Setúbal (Baía de Setúbal) – a more open space between the city and the Tróia Peninsula
  • Atlantic – for experienced sailors; access to the open sea via the Sado estuary mouth
  • Arrábida coast – scenic routes along the cliffs of the natural park

Wind regime

The Costa Azul coastline is characterised by:

  • Nortada – a steady north-westerly wind that strengthens in summer (typical of the entire Portuguese coast)
  • Thermal breezes in the estuary – predictable daytime winds ideal for sailing
  • Winter storms from the south-west – of interest to experienced sailors

Clube Naval Setubalense

Clube Naval Setubalense (CNS), founded on 6 May 1920, is the key sailing institution in the region. The club is located on the Setúbal waterfront and offers:

  • Sailing schools – training for children and adults (from Optimist class to cruising yachts)
  • Regattas – organisation of and participation in competitions at regional and national level
  • Canoeing and kayaking – popular disciplines for exploring the estuary
  • Rowing – a traditional discipline

Yacht classes

The main Olympic and recreational classes are represented in Setúbal:

Class Description
Optimist Children’s sailing school (ages 6–15)
Laser/ILCA Single-handed racing dinghy
420 Two-person training dinghy
Hobie Cat Catamaran for coastal sailing
Cruising yachts Ocean passages and coastal cruises

Marina de Setúbal

Marina de Setúbal is located in the city centre, on the waterfront. The marina provides:

  • Berths for yachts and motor boats
  • Technical maintenance
  • Access to water, electricity, fuel
  • Proximity to the historic centre, the Mercado do Livramento and restaurants

The marina serves as a base not only for athletes but also for recreational yachting – a popular way to explore the Arrábida coast, the bay of Portinho da Arrábida and the Tróia Peninsula.

Regattas and competitions

Regular events

  • Sado Estuary Regatta – an annual competition in the estuary waters
  • Travessia Setúbal–Tróia – a crossing of the estuary combining sailing and rowing disciplines
  • Stages of the national championship of the Federação Portuguesa de Vela in various classes

The exact calendar and names of regular regattas require verification against the current schedules of the CNS and the Federação Portuguesa de Vela.

Ocean racing

Setúbal is used as a waypoint port for ocean yacht races along the Portuguese coast. The bay and marina provide convenient berthing for participants.

Dolphin watching

A distinctive feature of yachting in Setúbal is the chance to observe bottlenose dolphins (~25 resident individuals in the Sado estuary as of 2023). This is one of the few places in Europe where dolphins can be spotted directly from a city marina. Summer restrictions apply on approaching dolphins to minimise human impact.

Connection to the fishing tradition

Sailing in Setúbal is inseparable from the fishing culture. Many local sailors are descendants of fishermen whose families lived on the water for centuries. Traditional fishing boats – the bateira and chinchorro – though not sailing vessels in the modern sense, gave local mariners a deep knowledge of the winds, currents and navigation of the estuary.
